Breast Care

Care rendered in preparation for breast feeding.

Materials Used:

A lined tray containing:
1. a jar/ bottle of clean cotton balls
2. lukewarm water in a container
3. kidney basin/ small bowl
4. waste container

Procedure:

1. Explain the procedure to the patient.

2. Prepare the necessary materials and perform medical handwashing.

3. Bring materials to the bedside and screen the patient.



4. Expose 1 breast and spread the towel below it properly to prevent unnecessary exposure of body parts, at the same time inspect for presence of rashes, skin irritation, redness and other abnormalities.

5. Get 1 cotton ball, place it over the kidney basin or bowl and pour lukewarm water.

6. Clean breast starting from the nipple to areola in a circular pattern. Discard cotton ball. Repeat this step until the part is thoroughly clean to reduce transmission of microorganisms.

7. Dry breast with clean cotton balls following the same stroke. Moist retained harbors microorganisms.

8. Do the same with the other breast.

9. Perform after care.
