Wound Dressing

A guide to wound dressing.

1. For proper identification of the patient, check the chart for doctor's order, name of patient, dressings, solutions and ointment to be used.

2. Explain to the patient the following: procedure, purpose and use of overbed table and garbage can.

3. Clean overbed table.

4. Put garbage can near to the patient's bedside (remove cover).

5. Leave patient to prepare things for dressing.



6. Do medical hand washing and bring things to patient's room.

7. Arrange dressing and materials on overbed table.

8. Prepare plaster, and stick bag to the side of the patient's bed.

9. Provide privacy (close curtain).

10. Expose patient's wound. Remove soak dressing by using clean forceps. Remove the plaster toward the incision or wound. Don't forget to wash your hands afterwards.

11.  Put all necessary things needed (cotton balls, gauze, pledget, etc.)

12. Pick sterile cotton and may squeeze cotton by solution over sterile bowl to avoid further contamination to occur.

13. Succeeding cottons must be squeezed over garbage can for excess solutions may be for transmitting pathogens.

14. Cover wound and plaster.

15. Drape patient for privacy.

16. Remove bag and pour excess solution to garbage can.

17. Separate used and unused equipment and materials.

18. Wash instruments and return instruments to case for next wound dressing.
